Maria Amalia of Austria (1746-1804), Duchess of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla by marriage to Ferdinand, Duke of Parma. She was the eighth child of Maria Theresa of Austria and Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor, but their fourth eldest surviving daughter. She was also the elder sister of Marie Antoinette, Queen of France. She was extremely close to all her sisters, including Marie Antoinette, whose last letter written in imprisonment was to Maria Amalia. She also enjoyed painting and one of her paintings still survives today. She had nine children, but only four survived infancy and all four, apart from one, died before they were in their mid-fourties
